Pick up day: Weeks 12 & 13
Vegetables don’t know that we’re on vacation. They ripen when they are good and ready and if we happen to be headed to the Volunteer State for ribs and music when that happens, we need a vegetable proxy. Luckily, my friend Wawa is a foodie, a blogger and lives close enough to make the pick up for Week 12. She forwarded me her haul which included some cute cherry tomatoes (which showed up on a delicious tart at a baby shower!) and some purple basil.
She also landed a bunch of peppers–one clearly a small green pepper, one clearly a giant jalapeno pepper and one wonky green thing that looks like a mix. Then she got 3 yellow peppers that I think are Hungarian wax peppers. It figures–as soon as I post a big braggy post about how Greg and I can identify most produce, the farm throws us something like wax peppers.
Here’s the breakdown; the total for this week was $39.76:
1 bunch Beets
3 Cucumbers
14 Tomatoes
2 Green peppers
1 Watermelon
3 Yellow Squash
1 head Green Cabbage
1 bunch Basil
1 pint Cherry Tomatoes
1 Jalapeno Pepper
3 Wax Peppers
Then we resumed our share this week, Week 13. Greg picked up this week and when I called him on my way home from work, I asked “How’d we do this week?” He kind of sadly said “Ok, I guess.” I’m imagining we got just a tiny tomato and yet another bunch of beets. No! We got $33.12 worth of produce! We’ve just gotten so used to giant shares that this seemed just “ok” to him. Or, he’s an emotionless robot who won’t even get misty when Marley dies in Marley and Me. True story.
Here’s our breakdown:
1o small Plum tomatoes
2 Heirloom tomatoes
5 Mixed sweet peppers
1 Watermelon
3 Yellow Squash
1 Basil
1 pint Cherry Tomatoes
3 Mixed hot peppers
1 Cantaloupe
1 bunch Chives
2 Cucumbers
